EMS has come a long way from its early days where the motto was "Hire the fastest drivers and have them put the pedal to the metal!"
Experience over the last 50 years has shown us that a mixture of urgency and on-scene treatment produce the best results in most cases.
So what will people say 50 years from now about our "archaic" solutions in the 21st century?
I firmly believe one stark contrast will be that we don't have a holistic infrastructure for health information. Not at a regional level, a national level or an international level. We just aren't set up to effectively share information.
The good news is that is changing. Changing quickly in some areas of the world.
Our focus as a health industry needs to be on interfaces and integration. We need to agree on a common language for communication (HL7?). That isn't the biggest hurdle. The biggest hurdle is politics and territorialism.
Organizations and governments truly need to work together for the common good. Not just to protect their turf or inflate their reputation.
I have a vision for the near future that hopefully will give us a glimpse of where we will be in 50 years. It may involve us all being robots and Star Trek transporters being a reality. I just can't promise anything!
I just need to free up time from work and my family to share that vision so please stay tuned!
